This refreshing and nutritious DIY mocha frappuccino smoothie will make you feel like you’re drinking the Starbucks version, only better and healthier!
This delicious coffee smoothie is the perfect way to start your morning or fuel you after your morning workout. With a hint of chocolate and natural sweetness from banana (and a healthy dose of protein), it’s the perfect way to start your day! By the way, if you like banana, give this banana date smoothie a try.
With summer in full swing, I’m craving cold, refreshing drinks like nothing else.
And with coffee as my must-have first drink of the day, I wanted to come up with a nutritious way to enjoy it. Healthy smoothies are a staple in my house, because you can pack so much nutrition and deliciousness into them, so I thought “why not make a coffee smoothie?!”
Admittedly, one of my favourite summer indulgences for years has been the Mocha Frappuccino from Starbucks. Yum! But what I realized is that there’s 300-400 kcal (depending on size), and not much nutrition. Good for an occasional indulgence? Sure, no problem.
But if I want to enjoy a Mocha Frappuccino more often than that, I had to figure out how to make my own at home. I decided to not only make it a slushy coffee drink, but transform it into a meal-worthy SMOOTHIE!
It turned out to be amazingly delicious, and not only does it give me the pick-me-up I need first thing, but it also dubs as a healthy breakfast.
To make it I use:
- strong brewed coffee (chilled it in the fridge)
- frozen banana
- natural peanut butter
- almond milk
- yogurt
- protein powder (this one is my fave!)
- cocoa powder
- a bit of sweetener (Stevia)
This DIY mocha frappuccino smoothie will make you feel like you’re drinking the Starbucks version, only better and more nutritious!
Modify as you wish!
This recipe is really versatile and modifiable.
You can use any type of milk that you’d like, and you can substitute another nut or seed butter in for peanut butter if you have an allergy or preference for something else.
You can also add in extras like hemp hearts, other plant-based protein sources like lentils or shredded coconut if you want to!
If you’re on the go and need something a little bit more substantial, pair this smoothie with one of Made with Local’s Real Food Bars!
Oh, and I’m often asked which blender I like to use; the Nutri Ninja is by far my fave!

This smoothie is delicious! I love Starbucks mocha Frappuccinos and this measures up. Plus it’s a lot healthier and cheaper. I used powdered espresso in water vs brewed coffee. And I added a splash of sugar free chocolate syrup and doubled the cocoa powder. I’ll be making this again for sure.
