2016 has been a a year of growth, discovery and challenge for me. I adjusted to being a mom of three (and couldn’t imagine it any other way!), I continued to grow and shape my business into what I envision it to be, and I learned a lot about myself. I discovered that as resilient and determined as I am, I’m also human. I can’t do everything…well, at least.

I push myself really hard, in all areas of life. When I want something, I go after it, and as my mom would say “won’t give up”. It’s true. And I think part of the reason I’ve been able to juggle everything up until now is because I’m determined, passionate and stubborn. Blessings and curses all at the same time. I don’t think I’m alone in my quest to be the best at everything I do (you A-types out there will know what I’m talking about), but at some point, things start to suffer. Relationships, parenting, health… maybe a combo. With three young kids, a small business and what seems like a million other things going on, life seems to be whizzing by at warp speed, and I haven’t been experiencing all of its joys… the way I hope to anyway.
So, in 2017, for me, something’s gotta give.
My priorities and goals are shifting and narrowing. I will continue to strive to do my best (that’s just me), but I will stop striving to be THE best at everything. This is big for me. And I have a good feeling that everything will start to fall into place (and perhaps not seem as challenging as it did this past year).
Prioritizing for me means saying “no” more, in my business and personal life, only taking on work that excites and energizes me, and turning down opportunities that don’t feel 100% right. It means leaving my phone in my purse when I get home so that I can focus on my family, and not staying up until midnight every night working. It means keeping life as simple as possible so that I’m not overwhelmed with commitments and to-dos (and can focus more on the important things). And it means being present and mindful.

I’m also going to do myself a favour, take a dose of my own medicine, and plan out our weeknight meals a bit better. But, in the spirit of my 2017 goals, keep it as simple as possible. I’m tired of scrambling at the last minute, and eating later than we should (as I’m sure many of you can relate to). So, I’ve put together a sample of some of our favourite (and easy) recipes for you to add to your supper rotation. Hopefully this helps to simplify your life a little bit. And heck–what mom doesn’t love new easy and healthy recipes?!

That was awesome Sarah – as a fellow RD mom of 3 – I have to agree…something has gotta give (for me it’s usually a clean house). Happy 2017!
Well put Sarah. I know that is a similar goal for our family too along with decluttering -as who wants to put away/shuffle things that don’t bring joy to your day to day!
I agree!! 🙂
I can totally relate to this. As Type A entrepreneurs, it’s in our nature to want to do EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME. But as you say, that can have consequences. I hope you’re able to find a better work-life flow in the new year, I know I’ll be trying too!
It honestly just helps knowing I’m not the only one! Best of luck with your balancing act too Sally! 🙂
